E&O Topic of the Month

July is a prime time to enjoy Colorado's lakes and reservoirs. As all of us know recreating in these waters does come with risks. Here are several helpful tips to safely enjoy the many lakes Colorado has to offer:

  • Know your local lake or reservoirs policies on life vests. Most require at a minimum to have a life preserver on board.
  • Keep an eye on water quality closures. E.coli and blue algae are two common contaminates that can cause beach and reservoir closures.
  • Be aware of water craft fees.
  • Keep water craft clean and be aware of invasive species like zebra mussels. Several jurisdictions required mandatory spray downs of water craft before recreating to minimize the spread of these harmful species.
  • Keep an eye on the heat. Heat stroke and sun exposure can be common when having a fun filled day on the water. Stay hydrated and wear sun screen or sun protection when in the sun for extended hours.
  • Know the weather forecast, Colorado can see all seasons in one day. Best practice is to plan for water activities in the morning as the chance for thunderstorms is low. High winds can also be extremely dangerous so have a plan for reaching shore if the weather turns.
